Prahran Apartment Fitout

Prahran, Melbourne

Transforming a historic chocolate factory into a bespoke urban dwelling, the Prahran Apartment project marries the rich industrial legacy of the Red Tulip building with contemporary design and sustainable living, creating a unique, modern home.

Located at 10 Hillingdon Place, Prahran, this one-bedroom apartment is situated within the historically significant former Red Tulip chocolate factory. This building, renowned for its industrial past, has been thoughtfully transformed into a residential complex that balances its robust heritage with contemporary design elements.

The apartment itself, while retaining the unique character that nods to its historical essence, required significant updates to align with the standards of modern living. The initial fit-out, showing signs of aging and wear from budget-conscious modifications, called for a more thoughtful approach to renovation to restore its quality and functionality.

The renovation was driven by the clients' needs, who, after relocating from overseas, saw potential in the apartment not just as an investment but as a home. Key considerations included creating a functional space conducive to working from home and living comfortably with their dog, Bella. This transformation has turned the apartment into a stepping stone towards their homeownership journey in Victoria.

The redesign emphasized sustainability, incorporating an all-electric retrofit and utilizing recycled materials where possible to minimize environmental impact. These changes not only enhanced the apartment's functionality and aesthetic appeal but also its energy efficiency and sustainability.

This project stands as a testament to Archive's commitment to sustainable design and their ability to meld the old with the new in creating spaces that respect and enhance their historical contexts while meeting contemporary needs.

We offer deep respect to the traditional custodians of this land and honour their ancestors who have nurtured and cared for this country for thousands of years. We pay homage to the living cultures, languages, and knowledge systems of the Noongar, Wurundjeri and all Indigenous Australian peoples.
